Field epidemiology program design & delivery
We help country teams plan, design and deliver all three tiers of field epidemiology training — Frontline (One Health), Intermediate, and Extended — including our One Health FETP model, purpose-built for the Pacific. Whether you're commencing a new program or strengthening an existing one, our support spans the full cycle: from Theory of Change consultations through delivery and mentoring, to the procedures, governance and accreditation groundwork that keep programs running long after we step back.
Our programs
Frontline (One Health) FETP — a 3-month introductory program combining classroom training with mentored fieldwork. It's genuinely multi-sectoral, engaging professionals from human health, animal health, agriculture, wildlife, environment and border security, and builds skills in surveillance, outbreak response, evidence-based decision-making and cross-sectoral collaboration.
Intermediate FETP — a 9-month program, running in PNG since 2013, that goes beyond data collection and analysis to train fellows to design, implement and evaluate public health interventions based on their own field project findings.
Built for country context
We co-design every program with national partners rather than importing a fixed curriculum. In 2025 this looked like:
East Sepik, PNG — the first co-funded provincial cohort of the One Health Frontline FETP, with 9 fellows conducting surveillance and field investigations across zoonotic disease, environmental health, food safety and vector-borne disease priorities.
Vanuatu — FEiA epidemiologists worked alongside the Ministry of Health to co-design training materials and develop Vanuatu-specific case studies covering malaria, leptospirosis, COVID-19, surveillance systems and outbreak response, ahead of the first cohort commencing in 2026.
Fiji — face-to-face consultations with the Fiji Centre for Disease Control produced a disease prioritisation exercise and an implementation plan for an intermediate-level FETP, expected to commence in 2026.
Timor-Leste — through our collaboration with Menzies School of Health Research, Timorese fellows have been invited to join the first Vanuatu FETP cohort.
Built to last
We don't just deliver training — we build the scaffolding that lets a program run nationally without us. In 2025, both the One Health Frontline FETP and the Intermediate FETP achieved national accreditation through PNG's Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST), recognised as a Certificate IV and Diploma respectively. We're also progressing renewed CIFAL/UNITAR international accreditation, which strengthens career pathways for graduates and program credibility more broadly.
