Nine frontline workers from PNG's Southern Highlands graduate from One Health FETP
On 11 September 2026, nine participants from Southern Highlands Province (SHP) graduated from Cohort 7 of the One Health Frontline Field Epidemiology Training Program of Papua New Guinea (OH-fFETPNG).
The cohort included people working in human health, animal health, agriculture and environmental health. Over three months, they trained in surveillance, outbreak investigation, communication and community engagement, then put their skills to work on field projects in their own workplaces and communities.
Each participant completed a field project, and the topics show how One Health works in practice. A few examples of projects completed by the cohort include:
Immunisation: assessing pentavalent vaccine coverage for children under one at Pakule Health Centre (3 to 28 August)
Animal health: investigating sarcoptic mange in Dei (27 July to 28 August)
Agriculture: investigating a sweet potato weevil infestation in Mendi Central and Nipa Kutubu
The cohort also marks a step towards a more locally led program. The Southern Highlands Provincial Health Authority (SHP PHA) co-funded delivery, and PNG faculty took on a bigger role in leading and teaching the training.
Congratulations to all nine graduates, and thank you to the faculty, mentors and partners who supported them.
