Covid-19 After Action Review - PNG

The FEiA team at the University of Newcastle led a cross-sectoral After-Action Review of Papua New Guinea's COVID-19 preparedness, response and recovery. The review ended with a four-day workshop in which representatives from all 22 provinces and national departments examined what worked, what didn't and why.

FEiA was invited to lead a cross-sectoral After Action Review (AAR) of Papua New Guinea's COVID-19 preparedness, response and recovery. An AAR looks back at an emergency response to find out what worked, what didn't and what should change before the next one.

To deliver the review, we expanded our team with two specialists. Dr David Hendrickx, a graduate of the European FETP (EPIET), and Dr Luca Saraceno, formerly the regional Public Health in Emergencies Coordinator for Africa at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, joined us. Throughout the review we worked closely with the COVID-19 National Control Centre.

The review culminated in a four-day, in-person workshop. Participants came from all 22 provinces, national departments and organisations across many sectors. Together they carried out root cause analyses of the response, looking at what went well and what fell short.

The workshop produced a set of practical, overarching recommendations to strengthen PNG's preparedness for, and response to, future pandemics and other public health emergencies.
